2005 : a review

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

its cny.. im feeling a bit sad.. and nostalgic.

and yes, im slightly miserable these few days… as can be seen from my past few blog posts.

BUt…

looking back….. have a lot to be thankful for… esp reviewing the events of the past year. quite a few major highlights, the most obvious being.. spm. duh…. so yeah.. here goes a list of "greats" that happend to me last year…

1) SPM
     - where i realised that studying isnt really that bad after all… and that i can get myself to study for more than 2 hours per day, every day, for 2 months. which is good.
     - where i found out that friends, are the ppl who would withstand seriously bad mood swings, and still manage to cheer me up with silly jokes… and the ever-amusing insulting-stick conversations…

2) DRIVING LICENSE!!!
     - woot!! now i have the *freedom* to drive badly….
     - and that i need to be careful, especially when giving lifts to friends. not that ill be driving much the next 2 years..

3) Band Comp ‘05.
      - i didnt take as big a role in this than i had wanted to, or hoped for.. too many tings going on.. and im not as commited in band as i would have liked.. skipped too many pracs, didnt get as close or as bonded with my fellow band members… that not withstanding… i still had a great time, will forever remembr how sad i felt when we didnt get anything.. and yet proud and estatic cuz the formation was great… seriously. GO ACS MILITARY BAND!!

4) Debate Comp
     - we made it all the way to the state levels, this was another very significant event. however… tradeoffs were involved.. i skipped the MASCTECH exibition cuz i was in penang. Debate was throughly fun.. esp when the arguements were never settled properly. and all the sessions, missing class, missing exams, breaking rules "with permission…" =D

5) the Dublin trip
     - amazing 10 days, extremely lucky to have won. nth much really to say abt it tho, its one of those you-hadta-be-there events.

6) MYF
     - ok, fine, this isnt exactly a event, but really… just thought ill jot it down. all the friends that were there to make fellowship more interesting; table tennis with jost etc; sugar from tze; getting glared at by jolynn cuz i was either talking to much or sleeping…. and i would like to thank everyone for not pressuring me to make a decision yet…

7) times in the co-co room; playing with butane and other misc events.
    - and i wont easily forget music-sharing, STONE, getting into the edit board’s and prefects’ files, crash courses in photoshop and programming, watching DCI and band clips, mail merging with 20 fields…. and when my pinafore almost caught fire cuz we was playing with butane…

eventful year.

here’s to hoping year 2006 will be as good as 2005. *cheers!*

all i want for CNY is…

sleep.

im serious… lack of sleep is really getting to me. when i lack sleep im… dysfunctional. and most of ya have seen me when im dysfunctional at least once.

our physics tutor (AND current lecturer) is as boring as Mr. Pang. its time to practice my semi-conscious-with-eyes-open half-sleep i learnt in myf.

its not that im staying up becuz of schoolwork.. its the hostel schedule… cuz the roll call is at 10.20.. if we’re lucky it finishes at 10.40. which means the earlist we can sleep is about 11 (aftr brushin teeth etc.) and in the morning we have to wake up at 5.30 cuz bus leaves at 6.30am..

which means (on average) i get about 6.5 hours of sleep per night on weekdays.

yeah i know… thats typical for college students.

BUT for someone whos accustomed to spending 8 hours of sleep per night, every night … even DURING SPM! … by the time its friday im asleep on my feet (in the mrt on the way home from school. im not kidding.)

——–
this is the 1st time in my life im spending more time in school than sleeping.

school start : 7.45 am

school end:
monday : 5.15
tues : 6.15 (this is really bad…)
wed : 5.30
thurs : 5.45
fri : 3.45 (yay…)

*note : at most.. i have 2 hours of break on any given day. 2 30 minutes breaks, 1 hour for lunch.

i cant believe im HAPPY at going home at 3.45… back home id be screaming blue murder if u made me stay back that long. how things change.

worse subject : malay a.k.a. "lets all brainwash malaysians and indonesians into becoming singapore citizens" (ITS FOUR FREAKING HOURS A WEEK DOING BLOODY NOTHING EDUCATIONALL!!!)

to top it all off… im falling sick. fluish. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY *rolls eyes*.

eve. ZZZzzzzZZZzzZZZzzz.

Settling in.

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

2nd week of school is ending…(1st proper week cuz last week was just orientation) and im finally sorta settling down. as in getting used to this place. Tho i do still get lost around the school and dont know which buses to take to go anywhere.

Decided to volunteer for class rep (ketua kelas). i think i was outta my mind. its one more thing that i can whine about.. but i wont whine so much cus then ill just get the you-asked-for-it reply. we shall see how things go. *i can hear sighs of "eve’s going nuts again… wait… wasnt she always nuts?".*

as for CCAs… after the CCA carnival where the clubs were doing their recruiting, i decided against band and badminton. yes, i know, its such a waste after being so loyal to them for like 5 and 12 years respectively, but… i do have my reasons.

the long and short of it is :- i wont be able to improve my skills much in either band or badminton. simply cuz their standard (even tho is higher than mine), isn’t high enough to make it seem like enuff of a challenge to keep me occupied for the next 1.5 years. i do *not* want to be stagnant for yet another 1.5 years. trust me, its not fun.

in the end, opted for a MASTECH-like club, called Project Eureka (the other draw of this club is… its only once a week. which is good. cuz…. im this suicidal triple-science student, so better not take on too much)

but… i might…. have badminton as a sorta "unofficial cca" as in a drop in just to play with the ppl there (and maybe - very very slim chance since im not a member -  represent school) .. without commiting to their 3x a week training schedule. no way im spending that much time on badminton….

outside school……

sailing … on a crappy boat, in the rain, and there wasnt any wind. i got seasick on land (when i got back), and throw in a sunburn FOC. ’nuff said.

eve. (still alive and *almost* thriving despite being perpetually sleep deprived)

——
HI IVY!!! yeah… ASEAN offerd a scholarship so i went to singapore instead of NZ.

——

eve is suicidal.

eve is planning on taking 3 sciences and maths at A-levels, PLUS econs at a subsidary level. time needed for eve to catch up with the academic studies –> approx 60 hours per week. 60… SIXTY?!?!?!?!? …. THATS 10 HOURS PER DAY!!! (Sundays off)

TIME NEEDED FOR LECTURES AND TUTORIALS

3 sciencs x 5 hours  = 15 hours
1 Math x 5 hours     = 5 hours
1 Econs x 2 hours    = 2 hours
General Paper x 3 hrs = 3 hours
Project Work x 4 hrs  = 4 hours

TOTAL                = 29 Hours.

the above does not count in the time needed to prepare for lessons… general rule of the thumb is you spend an hour doing your own study and revision and homework for every hour spent in lectures and tutorials…

which gives me a GRAND TOTAL of 29 x 2 = 58 hours. thats… bad. hectic is an understatement.

i havent included co-curicular activies (CCAs) yet.

if i continue with band, it takes up 5 hours per week, when they arent and events on. but when performances start… you get the picture.

and badminton is worser still. trainin 3 times a week for 3 hours each. but its still unconfirmed wheter someone actually needs to attend all practices. even so…

so. added up, 58 (academic) + 6 (CCA) + 3 (misc school activities) = 67 hours per week.

67 hours. wow.

remind me again why im doing this?
